In preparation for the massive update coming later this week, which introduces over 80 new Pokemon, as well as new items and other features, a Pokemon GO storage upgrade sale is set to start later today, Feb 16, and end on Feb 28.
The official Pokemon GO app page on twitter posted the news earlier today –
To help you prepare for upcoming adventures, Pokémon Storage upgrades require 50% fewer PokéCoins starting the afternoon of Feb. 16–28 PST!

That’s 100 coins instead of 200 for those who do the math. We kind of expected to get some additional storage space for free along with the update, but it seems like that won’t be the case, for now at least.
